Dear Sec 1s,

Check this out - a very good opportunity for those of you who would like some exposure and an audience! Anything goes, from small chamber groups, duets, solo... Let me know if you would like to perform and I'll get in touch with the organiser (so I can negotiate for better timings, etc). State your availability (date AND time), the composers/ titles AND length (timing) of the piece(s) you want to play. ASAP! 1 or 2 pieces per person/ group is ideal.

Just a note - I will be doing O Level Invigilation on the 6th so will be unable to be at Millenia Walk, but other days I'll be there if there are any of you playing! For encouragement and support :D

Dear Teachers,

As part of their programme, The Substation is providing a performance platform at Millennia Walk Atrium for students, especially those in the Music Elective Programme. The space and performance will be free, just sign up to perform and the space is yours, however, students must find their way to the Atrium themselves. An officer from The Substation will be there to oversee the event.

A baby grand piano will be available for use, however, no music stands will be provided. To sign up, please send a request to annabelle@substation.org with your contact details and proposed repertoire and length of your programme. Students may perform more than once if they wish, but they should indicate this in their email response.

The dates currently available for performances are:

5th November 2007 (Monday)

6th November 2007 (Tuesday)

9th November 2007 (Friday)

Time: between 12.30pm to 2pm

Please send your requests by this Friday, 26th October 2007

Hope you are enjoying your e-learning (holi)day! Thought I'd post something here in case you get tired and need to relax :)

I am very happy to say that I've just been looking at your overall results for the whole year, and ALL of you passed MEP! Not only that, you did really really well too, and I'm proud of especially those who have made tremendous improvement in the subject! I know it is a challenging subject, but you have all done yourselves proud by doing so well! So YAY to all of you!

So go on, enjoy the long weekend, and hope to see your SIGNED exam papers soon! (REPS! I WANT THE PAPERS!)

Hello everyone!

Hope the revision is going well, cos exams are just round the corner! Hopefully you've had some time to relax in the midst of all the revision as well (which explains why you're online now and reading this! Yay!)

1e8 people, thanks to all of you who handing your files in for checking... everyone of you handed in your files! A lot of lovely lovely files, all well-organised and neat and colourful! I'm done with them, you can come collect them back from me anytime!

1e9 people, I haven't received a single file from your class? Quick hand it in so I have time to at least glance through it before your exams next week... you'll need them for studying too!

Important re. Final Exams

Dear Sec 1s,

You should have received your final term exam timetables by now! Here is some important information regarding your exams.

1) Performing exams

-- Thursday 13th and Friday 14th September 2007, 2pm to 6pm (both days)

-- The performing schedule is up on the MEP noticeboards on Level 4 (near Janacek room). Please check for your day and time, and indicate which instrument(s) you will be playing.

-- You can play either 1 long piece or 2 shorter pieces, to a total timing of 4 - 6 mins. You may choose to play either solely on your 1st instrument, or one piece on your 1st instrument and one piece on your 2nd instrument.

-- If you are playing an instrument that requires accompaniment (such as violin), be sure to arrange your accompanist in advance and ensure they can make it for your timeslot. If they are unable to, you can do a mutual swop with someone else (be sure to ask permission before swopping!). Mark the swop CLEARLY on the performing schedule.

-- On the day of your exam, be sure to bring your instrument (if you need one), and arrange for any page-turners, music stands, extra chairs as required. You are to submit one photocopied set of your scores (instrumentalists please provide the full score, i.e. with the accompaniment part)

2) CA Papers

-- In my happiness at your great results this term, I forgot to ask you to get your papers signed. So please do obtain your parent's signature on your CA paper, and Nina and Cherlyn help to collect please! Tell your friends if they do not regularly read this blog as well, thanks all!

Busking on Carnival Day

Hello my dear sec 1s!

OK, it's the 3rd week of the school holidays!!! *groan*

I know, I don't want it to end either.

But life has to go on, right?

That's why we should all look forward to..... Carnival Day 2007!

It's when the whole school celebrates National Day, Aces Day, and the TKGS Carnival Day all in one!

It's also when musical students like yourself get a chance to do busking!

Basically this is when you get a chance to perform in an informal setting, and help raise funds for the tkgs needy students' fund, or your cca.

No need to be all hoity-toity and play classical music (though you certainly can if you want to); in fact most buskers in TKGS just jam with their rock bands and sing Lindsay Lohan style, a la Freaky Friday. Oh wait. Lindsay Lohan is a bad role model now that she does the whole drug and alcohol thing. Nevermind, find some other worthy role model! If you want to do the whole emo thing, it's fine too! You can even maybe compose some music (after all those great composition classes we've been having) and play it with a few friends! [Singaporean, Singaporean, Singaporean Dream - ah!!!]

So...
We are looking for buskers for Carnival Day!

I'm collating items for three 20-30 minute slots on the day. You don't have to fill up the whole 20 mins by yourself, maybe just 5 mins- 10 mins?

If you or your class/ schoolmates would like to busk, please let me know the following information asap:

1) Names + classes of buskers

2) Titles + durations of items (criteria: all items must comprise of at least one item related to Singapore/ National Day)

3) Any special equipment required (e.g. amps for guitars, mikes,instruments, chairs etc)

Spread the word around to your friends/ classmates/ CCA mates too!

Ok, the CAs are over, time to get back into the swing of lessons, and of course look forward to the mid-year holidays! Yay!

Last one before the end of term: 1/8 guess the composer on the left, 1/9 guess the composer on the right! Usual rules: sweeties to first person who guesses correctly!

Also, I've uploaded the "vocal genres" clips onto our 4shared site, just click on the link to download the various clips! There are the yodelling, recitative and aria, scatting, chanting examples, plus the Bach Chorale, which is to show the 4 different types of voices (SATB).

Performance Exams

Dear Sec 1s,

Next week's lesson (Week 7) will be your performance exams. Just some reminders:

You are to play a piece between 2 and a half to 5 minutes long (no more than that). If your piece is too short, you are allowed to play a maximum of two pieces, up to a maximum total time of 5 minutes.

Ensure that you bring a photocopy of whatever you are playing to the examination room, as I will need it for marking purposes. If you are an instrumentalist (e.g. violinist), bring the full score (with the piano part).

If you need a page turner/ music stand/ special instrument (e.g. guzheng), ensure that you make prior arrangements with the appropriate people to help out. The examiner cannot act as a page turner/ furniture arranger/ instrument carrier etc. for you.

Lastly, there will be a practice room for you to use before your exam. Please be considerate to those about to take their exam and do not hog the practice room. If you have finished with your examination, you are to remain in the Vivaldi Room and not be wandering around the school. I will be in the exam room and unable to supervise you in the Vivaldi, so I trust that you will be good all on your own! :)

Lessons proper will resume in Week 8.

You should be able to access the powerpoints and video clips that I've uploaded (Bob the VidTech!). Let me know if it doesn't work!

Hope you are all preparing hard for your upcoming CAs! I know a few of you are really anxious, but rest assured as long as you are clear about the stuff we've covered during lessons, you should be fine!

Important to know key words like textures, modulations, (key) relationships, cadences, intervals, harmonies, ornaments, etc. You should also know what each means, for e.g. if asked for "cadences" you should answer with the proper terms (either perfect, imperfect, plagal or interrupted).

Also you need to know the various genres we've covered: keyboard, orchestral (including symphony/ concerto), chamber (quartets, trios, etc), vocal genres.

Also guidelines for your performing: you only need to play one piece, and it should be between two and a half to five minutes. If your piece is too short, you are allowed to play two pieces, but together they should still be less than 5 minutes. Two pieces is the maximum number of pieces you can play.

Also, please photocopy one copy of your piece(s) and submit the photocopy to me on the day of your exam. I will need the score when I examine you.

Hello all! 1/8 people have requested that I have two different pictures for "Guess the mystery composer", because as they say, the niners are much faster and always get the yummy sweeties! So I'm going to put this up specially for the 1/8 people, and in another post I will put up one specially for the 1/9 people. OK?

Hi everyone! This is Miss Ng here... Just wanted to post something to say hello, and for those who celebrated Chinese New Year, happy new year and hope you enjoyed your long break!

I finished marking your CAs over the CNY hols. Mostly pleased with your results. It was very obvious to me whether you had studied for this CA or not because those who did study did really well (highest was 39.5/40 marks! That's like 99%!), while those who didn't study had loads of blanks all over your papers. So you get rewarded for the effort you put in, ain't that great? Those who didn't study, I'm afraid you missed out on a really easy chance to do well in MEP, because this test was soooooo easy and you could have gotten such high marks if you really put in the effort! The tests will get harder and harder from now on, but I promise, as long as you work hard, you can and will do well in this subject. OK?

I need some help from you too... I don't know how to put a Powerpoint file on the blog! How do I put it in the post so you can download it? Reply on this blog if you've got any ideas!

BTW, I've put a picture of a composer above... a sweetie to the first person who can tell me who this is!
